Psychiatric Evaluation

An initial psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that aims to understand an individual's mental health, establish a diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan.

In other words, it is like a first meeting with a mental health professional where they try to get a complete picture of how you're feeling and what might be troubling you. During this session, you will be asked about your current symptoms, like changes in mood, behavior, or thoughts, and how these are affecting your daily life.

You will also be asked about your personal history, including any past experiences with mental health issues, your medical background, and your family history. This helps us understand if there might be any patterns or factors contributing to your current situation.

You will also be asked about your general well-being, including questions about any substances you might use, like alcohol or drugs, as these can impact mental health. We will discuss your social life, relationships, and work or school situation to get a sense of how these areas might be influencing your mental state.

The goal of this evaluation is to identify any mental health conditions you might have and to work with you to develop a treatment plan that could include therapy, medication, or other strategies to help you feel better.

Medication & Nutritional Management

Medication management involves the use of psychiatric medications to stabilize symptoms and provide relief. This can help improve daily functioning, making it possible to return to normal routines, such as work or school, and improve relationships.

This stabilization can also help you to engage more effectively in other therapeutic interventions, such as therapy. For example, medications can reduce symptoms like severe anxiety, depression, or mood swings, making it easier to focus on therapy sessions and apply coping strategies.

Nutritional management focuses on the role of diet and nutrition in mental health. Diet alone may not provide all the necessary nutrients that the brain needs to function optimally. Supplements can help fill these gaps, ensuring the brain has enough of the building blocks it needs. Nutritional management can help to:

  • Support neurotransmitter production and function, which are essential for mood regulation and brain function

  • Reduce brain inflammation, which has been linked to depression and other mental health conditions

  • Improve mood and energy

  • Help the body manage stress more effectively and reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress-related conditions

*Some nutritional lab tests may not be covered by your insurance. We will work with you to see which lab tests you would like to have checked.

Pharmacogenetic Testing

This type of testing can help determine how an individual may respond to certain psychiatric medications based on their genetic makeup. Some insurance plans may cover pharmacogenetic testing if it is deemed necessary to guide medication selection and dosing, especially in cases where patients have had difficulty finding effective medications or have experienced significant side effects.

*If genetic testing is not covered by your insurance, you have the option to pay out-of-pocket or explore payment assistance programs offered by the testing laboratories.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, can help individuals understand, manage, and overcome mental health issues, emotional difficulties, and relationship problems.

It involves the exploration of thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors, as well as the development of coping skills and strategies to improve mental health and quality of life.

Psychotherapeutic approaches may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A structured, goal-oriented psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): A type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes balancing acceptance and change, aiming to help individuals manage emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop distress tolerance and mindfulness skills.
